About Nina Shah
A little bit about myself..
My name is Nina. I am an Ayurvedic consultant. I live in Carlsbad (San Diego), CA with my husband and two teenage children. I am of Indian origin, born and raised in East Africa. My grandfather was a vaidya in Zanzibar, giving mostly free advice to the people of this tiny island. He followed a strict regimen of diet and lifestyle which were passed down in the family. Naturally, ayurveda has always been part of my life growing up and now I have chosen to study and practice it, formally. Understanding Ayurveda means living 'Mindfully'. Nowadays, it is a bit tough for kids to buy into that. Over the years my kids have realized merits of Ayurveda in their lives. It is good practice to live by healthy standards even though it's not easy to stick to.
In 2008, I earned my first certification as a consultant from Kerala Ayurvedic Institute based in Foster City, CA. I felt it was necessary to gain deeper knowledge in Ayurveda though at the time, it was difficult to find a school offering advanced studies. Finally, in 2009 I found out about Shubham Ayurveda in Fremont, CA. They were offering a 3-year course that comprised of and in fact has a well thought out curriculum equivalent to the BAMS degreee in India. The owner of Shubham, Dr. Yash Mannur is disciple of the great Vaidya late Madhav Kolhatkar. It was his vision and now Dr. Yash's to see Ayurveda be practiced and taught authentically and globally. Thus far I have completed 1st year at Shubham and am currently enrolled in the 2nd year. At the completion of the 1st year I underwent a rigorous 5-week certified training in Panchakarma in Pune, India. I also got training in various other 'karmas' or treatments that have great value in healing like, shirodhara - pouring warm liquid on forehead, pinda sweda - applying warm bolus on a body part..etc. To further enhance my education I am currently undergoing training to be a Licensed Massage Therapist.
Ayurveda is a vast field of study, I have dedicated my life in the study and practice of Ayurveda. Part of my study includes learning Sanskrit so I can understand Ayurveda 'Granthas' or classics and not depend on the translations provided where a lot can be lost.
Journey into Ayurveda is Journey of Life. I hope everyone has opportunity to experience it.
Namaste,
Nina Shah
