Dinacharya

Dinacharya is a Sanskrit word that means daily routine. 'Din' means daily and 'Charya' means routine. DinacharyaAyurveda recommends that in order to live a long, healthy life one should tune the body with Nature's cycle, be in rhythm with it. According to Ayurveda there are two cycles in the day that correspond with predominance of Doshas - Vata, Pitta, Kapha at different times. These cycles are shown in the image to the left. To be in tune with the nature's cycle, the following daily routine is recommended.

Time to wake up: As per Ayurveda, a healthy person should wake up two hours before sunrise. During these hours Vata element is dominant and there is presence of Sattva 'guna' or quality in these wee hours. Sattva is subtle, light, clear and pure. Vata being responsible for movement facilitates Sattva Guna in the body. This is the best time to study or meditate. Some exceptions to this rule of rising are the very young, the old, parents with small children, and people with fever or diarrhea.

Cleaning of Senses:

Wash face and eyes with water.

Teeth: Brush your teeth using astringent, pungent and bitter toothpowder/paste. This helps to remove buildup of stickiness collected over the night. Avoid sweet tasting toothpastes, they cannot remove the buildup, infact, they add to the buildup.

Scrape tongue with a tongue cleaner it helps to improve taste sensation, remove bad odor on the tongue. Ayurveda considers coating of the tongue an indicator of 'Ama' or toxins in the colon. Scraping helps to clear local coating though doesn’t remove it if its due to toxins in the colon, for that, one need herbs that will digest the toxins.

Gums: For healthy gums massage them daily with triphala powder mixed with little oil. Nose: do Jal neti and put a little oil in your nose to purify the sinuses, this prevents diseases and improves sense of smell.

Gargle with warm water or herbal decoction if you have excess salivation and stickiness in your mouth.

Massage: Abhyanga or oil massage is a great stress reliever. It can be done using warm sesame oil or coconut oil if you are predominantly of Pitta constitution or in the summer season. This is typically a self massage that can be done in 10-15mins. If you are short of time focus on scalp, forehead, temples, ears and soles of feet. Benefits of Abhyanga are many: slows aging process, prevents Vata aggravation, gives vigor and nourishes body, bestows long life, good sleep, and healthy looking skin.

Exercise: 'Vyayama' means physical exercise in Sanskrit. This can be some Yoga postures and breathing exercises(Pranayama) or a walk, a swim, or workout at the gym. Early morning exercises are beneficial, they remove stagnation in the body, mind, strengthen the digestive fire, reduce fat and gives you an overall feeling of lightness and joy as it fills your body with good Prana. Vyayama should not to be strenuous. In fact, Ayurveda recommends exercising at one half of your capacity or until you see sweat on underarms, nose, head shoulder or back.

Bathe: Taking a warm shower/bath (not cold), is recommended. Avoid pouring hot water on scalp as it weakens hair and eyes. If you have resorted to Abhyanga prior, use dry herbal powder to take off oil and and dirt. For Vata or Pitta use dry amalaka powder and for Kapha use either shikakai or bibheetaki powder.

Breakfast: This should be warm, nourishing and wholesome.

Study / Work : Do what you do from now until noon.

Lunch: should be taken between 12 and 2 P.M. This coincides with the peak Pitta period, Pitta is responsible for digestion. Ayurveda recommends lunch be the largest meal of the day. After the meal it is good to walk a little, a couple hundred steps to help digest food.

Siesta: Anything more than a short nap should be avoided. According to Ayurveda sleeping in the day is cause for many diseases.

Study / Work : Do what you do from now until supper.

Ease: From dinner to bedtime just take it easy. Spend time with family, read, and relax.

Sleep: is one of the tripods of healthy life. Going to bed in the Kapha period, in and around 10pm helps promote good sleep.

One should try to keep daily routine as close to the recommended Dinacharya as possible. Body may resist change at first but if you persist you are bound to be rewarded with a much healthier and satisfying life.
